People often ask us how we come up with the scents for our candles, and the answer isn’t always straightforward. In some cases, it happens on accident (stay tuned for our post on White Tea + Thyme) and others are very calculated and intentional. One thing every scent has in common, though, is that they are all inspired by our own experiences. Memories, trips, places, and feelings are all thrown through our little candle laboratory as we try to recreate our most personal sense – smell.

Bergamot + Basil, which turned out to be our number one seller last year, was half accident, half intentional. We knew we wanted to add a fragrance that was manly – something that was missing from our lineup at the time. Andrew and I both imagined it as something heavy and dirty and ultra-masculine, but as we experimented we somehow wound up with what we have today, which is really clean and fresh, but still had that manly touch.

Before we had settled on a real name for it, it’s internal working title usually shifted between “wet man” or “freshly showered man”. And that’s precisely what it is. Bergamot + Basil is strong and clean, with touches of that fresh-out-of-the-shower man smell (without smelling like Axe bodyspray…).

WITH home supply was created by two sisters with a passion for creating spaces that bring people together and has us debating whether or not to pack up our dogs, candles (and other not as important belongings) and move to Fayetteville, Arkansas.  We find ourselves regularly and longingly looking through their Instagram, pining after their Persian rugs, kitchen goods and other modern pieces.

We are very honored to be stocked by them, and couldn’t agree more with their motto: “Fill your home with good things and good people.” We also thought it would be fun to ask them a few questions and see what inspires the duo most. Read on for their answers!

Adventures, and travels greatly inspire us and have helped us develop our brand, and create new scents, what destinations and places inspire you the most?

We're inspired by so many places! Sarah's recent trip to Chile and my trip to Croatia and Budapest two summers ago (we love finding local markets when we travel), our stay in Inverness California last summer, a recent weekend I spent in New Orleans, and even right here around us. We're major estate sale hunters and are so often inspired by the worn collections of utility items and unique pieces we find in old homes here in the Ozarks.

How did you first hear about Standard Wax, and do you have a favorite scent?

I think we actually first saw Standard Wax on Instagram last summer when we were elbow-deep in the shop remodel! We instantly loved the gorgeous ceramics and branding and now we obviously love so many of the scents, but I think both of our favorites are Whiskey + Fig and Citrus + Black Currant.

We love repurposing our candles, and other home goods. Do you have a favorite way or item that you enjoy repurposing?

We mentioned that we're estate sale regulars, so we frequently repurpose vintage textiles and furniture pieces all over our homes. We love using old army canvas, flour sacks, and natural canvas drop cloths for so many things, we love framing poems and illustrations from favorite books, and the list goes on.

We are always planning our next trip, and love looking back on the memories made on past excursions. Do you have a favorite family vacation or road trip memory from your childhood?

Our dad's family has gone to the same beach on the Gulf Coast in Florida every summer since our dad was a kid. And even when we were young, the area where we stayed was still fairly undeveloped so it felt wide open and all ours. We'd spend days snorkling and finding sea creatures with our dad (we always let them go again!), boogie boarding, making big meals together every evening, chasing crabs with a flashlight at night... we just have the most rich, warm memories around our weeks at the beach as a big family.

Do you have a favorite quote or saying that you always find yourself going back to when you get stuck in your creative process or just when you need words of encouragement?

No one loves quotes and borrowed wisdom like we do so, yes, is the answer. It's so hard to narrow it down to a favorite but here's an attempt:

(To counterbalance Sarah's natural people-pleasing personality) “There is, in fact, a paradox about working to serve the community, and it is this: that to aim directly at serving the community is to falsify the work; the only way to serve the community is to forget the community and serve the work.” - Dorothy Sayers,  Why Work?

(This one has been a mantra of ours for the past decade)

"But unless we are creators we are not fully alive. What do I mean by creators? Not only artists, whose acts of creation are the obvious ones of working with paint of clay or words. Creativity is a way of living life, no matter our vocation or how we earn our living. Creativity is not limited to the arts."  -Madeleine L'Engle, Walking on Water

“As our sense of place grows stronger, it becomes essential to just let it be. Time enjoyed in solitude creates the space we need to let life’s wildness in. The sense of balance we strive for comes into focus when we spend our days with intent. Hours as precious as these are best lived generously and with care.”

Schoolhouse Electric & Supply Co pretty much sums up our philosophy on life in their latest catalog, and we’re thrilled to be a small part of their spring release. The shops, located in Portland, OR and New York, NY (as well as online) offer wonderful vintage inspired lifestyle wares, domestic utility goods, and various types of lighting fixtures, lamps, and chandeliers.

In their Spring catalog, titled “Chaos + Calm”,  Schoolhouse is focusing on finding a happy medium between embracing the chaos and valuing the calm in their homes and lives. While lingering through the pages, and wishing we could teleport to the Oregon coast, we look forward to this summer’s crazy moments, quiet evenings, everything in between.
